THE STORY
These started as experiments with some different screen-printing techniques with the goal of loosening up a bit and letting things happen spontaneously, in a less planned and controlled manner. The resulting monoprints on fabric turned out beautifully! The idea to use them as appliqués for a small edition of fabric wall hangings followed, and I'm so delighted with how they turned out. The details in the way the ink colours mix, slightly differently in each one, and in the different threads used for the stitching are even more stunning in person than in the pictures.

THE ARTWORK
18.5 x 25 inches Fabric Wall Hanging
Edition of 8 Silk-Screened Monoprints on Fabric (6 on burgundy, 2 on teal)
Hand stitched appliqué and seams using embroidery thread and vintage tapestry yarn
Each of the edition has slightly different stitching
Hung with lilac branches harvested by the artist (the lilacs needed some serious pruning!)
Printed with water-based, non-toxic fabric inks
Printed, sewn and assembled by hand, by the artist

THE FABRICS
The fabrics used are vintage or reclaimed fabrics that are sourced from a magical fabric sale that happens once a year in Calgary organized by the charity Ujamaa Grandmas. Donated fabric fills the basement of a church, with most fabrics going for $1/metre, and all proceeds going to the charity. It's honestly one of my favourite days of the year and has led to me having a large and cherished collection of amazing fabrics.
